An end portal serves as the critical gateway to The End, the final dimension in Minecraft. Accessing this structure requires preparation, knowledge, and a methodical approach to survive the journey. This guide details the exact steps necessary to locate, activate, and traverse an end portal, ensuring you reach the exit portal safely.
Locating the Stronghold
The foundation of using an end portal is finding the underground structure that contains it, known as a stronghold. You cannot craft or duplicate these portals; you must discover the existing one generated naturally in the world. To locate a stronghold, you will need Eyes of Ender, which are crafted by combining Ender Pearls with Blaze Powder obtained from the Nether.
Using Eyes of Ender
Once you have crafted Eyes of Ender, hold one in your hand and right-click to throw it into the air. The eye will float upward and hover for a moment before descending, pointing firmly in the direction of the nearest stronghold. You should throw multiple eyes to triangulate the precise location, as they only point in a general direction from your current position.
Entering the Stronghold
Follow the trajectory of the Eyes of Ender until they lead you underground. Strongholds are typically buried deep underground, so you will need to dig a vertical shaft or tunnel to access them. Be cautious of cave-ins and mobs during your descent, as the surrounding stone can be unstable. Bring torches to light your path and prevent hostile mobs from spawning in your excavation area.
Navigating the Hallways
Inside the stronghold, you will encounter a maze of tunnels, rooms, and bridges. The end portal room is a distinct chamber featuring a circular frame surrounded by water and silverfish spawners. The frame consists of 12 end portal frames arranged in a ring, and the interior must be empty to activate. Locate this room to proceed to the next stage of activation.
Activating the Portal Frame
To activate the portal, you must place an Eye of Ender into each of the 12 end portal frame blocks. The frames are positioned around the circumference of the circle, and they must be oriented correctly; the green side facing inward indicates the correct placement. As you insert the eyes, the portal will begin to shimmer with a purple glow, filling the empty squares in the center with a swirling vortex.
Gearing Up for Entry
Before stepping through the activated portal, ensure you are fully prepared for the confrontation awaiting you in The End. You should equip a strong set of armor, preferably Diamond or Netherite, and carry a powerful weapon such as a Sword or Bow. Bringing food, blocks for building, and potions will significantly increase your chances of defeating the Ender Dragon efficiently.
Entering The End
Once the portal is active, you can walk into the purple vortex to transport to The End. Upon arrival, you will find yourself on a series of End Stone islands surrounded by the void, with the Ender Dragon flying above. Your primary objective is to destroy the dragon, which involves targeting the crystals on nearby obsidian pillars that heal it. Defeating the dragon triggers the game’s ending sequence and allows you to access the exit portal.
Returning Home
After defeating the Ender Dragon, a dragon egg appears on the exit portal block, and the portal itself becomes active. Jump into this exit portal to return to the Overworld, where you will emerge in your original spawn location or nearby. This transition signifies the completion of the main game objective and grants you access to the End City structures, which contain valuable loot for further progression.
